Dr Madhurima Das Dr Madhurima Das

Chapter One

We swiped right on bumble and connected on Instagram, but then forgot about each other. Or maybe I chose to forget about it; this was not meant to be. He was settled in Singapore and I had sworn to steer clear of long distance relationships. Peace (on the relationship front at least) was what i now wanted as I tried making very important career decisions. Turns out it was eventually a very impulsive one!

Also the reels he sent me on insta made no sense! Imagine my horror when i realised it was supposed to be that way. That is how 21st century adults are supposed to connect. The reality was that I was not yet well versed with the ways of the virtual world. I am now, hopefully!
Cut to February 2024, I am in my 2nd year of residency in Pathology from North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri. I am single, wary of creepy men, and a little homesick. I decide now would be a good idea to visit my parents in Kolkata and sign up for a case presentation in a conference to be held there.
I receive a ping from him on Insta asking me if I’m in Kolkata.
He’s done this before, message me about my whereabouts the day before he leaves for Singapore, that is. I thought he did it on purpose. I usually didn’t think much of it. I might have had felt salty about it but I also found him cute! So pardoned, really!
I tell him about my conference and he says he’s flying to Kolkata the next day and wants us to meet. Let me be very clear, he did not mention it was going to be a date. He is going to refute this claim numerous times as the story proceeds. But it is how it is.
It was Chinese new year week in Singapore, offices were closed and he had made up his mind to stay back until the very last moment where he apparently decided he too wants to come back home. He’s not the homesick kind; I’ve always wondered what made him book that flight. But I also believe in destiny and serendipity , so I try not to think much. I am a closeted hard core romantic girl, you see!
It was valentines week. We both landed in Kolkata on the 15th of February and decided to meet on that very day. Good for us! 14th would have been too much. Also this was just a meet, I said to myself, no pressure at all. But i was excited. Though I did not approve of his Whatsapp DP (he had messy hair and put on a floral party tshirt), he was hilarious in the chats- very flirty and full of smart quips! Just the way I love it. Oh, it was going to be a long day and one of the best days of my life
